The Spurling Cannon Community Fund (SCCF) – April 2017 Update

The Spurling Cannon Community Fund (SCCF) April 2017 Update

Every year, The Spurling Cannon Community Fund (SCCF) supports a local charity close to our hearts. Although we aim to raise funds for the chosen charity through events such as our annual golf day, and sponsored bike ride, we also donate our time to help where we can.

During 2016/2017 The SCCF supported The Canterbury Oast Trust (COT) and 2 groups of our staff joined the team there to lend a hand.

The first team, comprising of Meghan, Sophie, Sharna, Lisa & Andy, kicked off our volunteering by cleaning the poly tunnels ready for the growing season in the vegetable garden down at The COT HQ – The Rare Breeds Centre in Woodchurch near Ashford. Though the Great British weather wasn’t on their side on the chilly November 2016 day, with pouring rain and freezing temperatures, the team were able to bring the poly tunnel back into use. All were in agreement that the day was a success and paved the way for the second team.

Amid suggestions that the second team must have an equally arduous task set for them, Lorraine, Ema, Richard, Steve, Joe & Ryan, travelled to The Rare Breeds Centre anticipating a gruelling day. Handed mops, hoovers and cleaning products they were tasked with deep cleaning the Granary restaurant ahead of the Easter weekend opening. Luckily, the sun shone bright on the warm March 2017 day, as the team finished their tasks and enjoyed a tour of the facility meeting many of the volunteers, adults with learning difficulties and the farm animals too.

Though the perks of stroking cute animals and riding the zip line were well received, the work done by the teams frees up the regular COT team, support staff and volunteers to concentrate on the great work that they do to support people with learning difficulties in Kent and Sussex.

For the 2017/2018 year The SCCF will be supporting Beach Within Reach. A great, small local charity that provides special wheelchairs that allow people with decreased or no mobility to access the beautiful beaches of Thanet. Support for them will include our annual Golf Day, this year being held at St Augustines Golf Club on 15th September 2017. Along with other planned activities to raise funds, we shall once again be providing volunteers to complete the more mundane task to free up time for the charity to concentrate on fulfilling their aims.

Although we get a warm and fuzzy feeling supporting these local charities, we also enjoy the tax benefits that charitable giving provides (we are accountants after all!).

Your company can reduce its corporation tax liability, or you can reduce you self assessment liability, by making charitable donations. Donations to a registered charity or community amateur sports club, whether in the form of monetary donations, sponsorship, providing employees time or equipment are tax deductible.

If you want to follow our lead and support a charity, nationally or locally, then give us a call so we can ensure you get the appropriate tax relief.
